Not sure what direction we were headed but I was very happy to be up against the mountains rather than haning out over the cliffs when we drove. It was only when we got back to the hotel that I read our car rental agreement closer and found that they don’t want you on that road. After the very beautiful but white knuckle trip, was glad to be back. My dingy wife kept saying, look at that, oh look at that. Sheesh was all I could do to stay on the road. Next time I’ll let her drive and take a change of underware.

Such an amazing drive, but not one I will be taking ever again. We too met a number of vehicles (including a dumptruck and schoolbus), which added way too much stress to our day.
We have been back to Maui once more since our drive along this highway, and only travelled to the blowhole before turning around back towards Honolua.

Meet a car one the one lane road? Well i did! I had to bac up about 300 yards straight up the edge of a cliff and then wedge my rental car against the side of the rocky hill to allow another car to pass. The male driver of that car would not back up for me! I have never been so frightenned driving in my whole life! Stay off this road - there have been deaths!
